Painted Stainless Steel Prop ?

I've just picked up a really good condition, used, 12" x 15" prop for my Evinrude at a boat auction.
I knew it wasn't aluminium because it's much heavier, so I thought it was stainless steel, but a magnet does stick to it and it is painted black.

Are there grades of stainless steel that can attract a magnet ? and would a stainless steel prop be (original) painted black ?

I'd have thought if it was just plain steel it would rust like hell on the scratches (which it isn't)...

Thanks for any help.

If you can get the make/model or numbers from the prop we might be able to pinpoint the specs for the thing.

Re: Painted Stainless Steel Prop ?

I don't know if this helps...I have a similar prop...I think. It's far heavier than aluminum, was painted black (I'm trying to polish the paint off), very heavy compared to aluminum and magnets do stick to it but not very well. I bought it off ebay and the original owner said it was stainless.
On the hub I have a slanted "M" inside a slanted box (looks like the manufacturer's logo), a part number 389510 and the size 13 x 19.

Paul...yes there are grades of stainless and magnets will stick to them. The "un-polished" props are painted.

The "M" is the logo the old OMC company had on their original parts.

Hi, thanks for the info
(what a great facility this forum is !)

The prop has 390850 12¼ x 15 and the "M" with a 3 after it.

If it is stainless, would getting the paint off and polishing it be a ok ?
thanks
Paul

Sure Paul....use go fast polish to polish it up with....just kidding on the go fast polish. I have a prop off my 50hp that had a stainless painted prop. My son took all the paint off and did a fair polish job on it. Don't know as I really gained anything but it looks neat.
