I just had my stringers reinforced and new floors and I am now in the process of painting the floors and decks. I already put my primer and first coat of paint. I am using international interlac 665 marine paint (single component allkyd). It looks good so far, but looks tooooo slippery. So I need to add some non-skid to the floors and deck. I have heard different methods. I bought a HPLV spray gun and was going to spray a couple final coats. I wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to get some texture/grip/antiskid on the floors. I was planning on buying some rustoleum antiskid additive and sprinkling that onto the floor while the paint is still wet. Will this work?? Or is there a better way? I heard mixing it in the paint doesn't work well and sprinkling it onto wet paint is a better method. Thanks for any input.

That would depend on the paint itself..as well as the application time.

You want the additive to be saturated with the paint. If you do the sprinkle method then you have two things to worry about..

1. Will the Paint allow the skid particles to 'sink' into it. ( sprinkle and the paint envelopes it like quicksand )
2. Do you have time to apply the paint before it becomes too thick to Accept the particles INTO it ( not just on top of it..but IN it ).

I very rarely do the sprinkle thing unless its a Small application like a step or something like that. The paint has to be WET for this to really work well.

Just like Varnished wood steps leading up to a flybridge.. My last varnish is applied and quickly sprinkle my GripTex ( us paint product ). The varnish envelopes the particles so there is no exposed product to the elements.

HVLP I have not tried. ( I dont think it will work as well as just mixing and rolling )

IF your going to spray nonskid particles out of a gun .. lemme give you a heads up with the gun trigger. Never Ever let the trigger stop sending Air to the Air nozzle unless its pointed away from your project. If you happen to have a particle get between the Needle and the Fluid Seat ( without air ) you will quickly become aware of curse words that have never been used in your vocabulary. ( Including the 7 words you can never say on TV by George Carlin .. you will make stuff up after those words are used up ;) ).

YD.
