recently i just purchased a 1977 sea ray 21 foot boat.... i love the boat, except for the ugly yellowish brown color the hull is..... ive been searching the forums for different tips.... the hull is in great condition and the current paint/ gel coat looks prety decent for being 30 yrs old.... my question is, could i just sand it with like 120 grit and paint it.... im not looking for a great finish, i just want to paint it all white with a blue stripe around it.... whats a decent paint to use, thats not overly expensive.... do i need to do anything else to it besides sanding it? any help is greatly appriciated, i am new to the boating expierence :)

Re: Painting a boat

120# is a little tuff for a finish coat. 220# would be more like it. Here is a link to the Interlux web site. Look on the left side and do a search for "how to". It will give you a good, basic understanding of the precedure.
I'm not going to sell you on their paint, or anyone else's. But a good single pack linear polyurethane paint will give you some great results.
However, your finish coat will only be as good as the prep work. Learned a long time ago that it is 90% prep - 10% paint. Have fun with your project.

Re: Painting a boat

Ok.... say i just give it a half way decent sanding like 220 to take the origonal shine off the boat and paint it with some rustoleum marine paint, what what would happen? the boat is always trailered...... it doesnt have to look great or super shiney, i just want to get rid of that color..... and not have it peel off right away..... i figured white would hide a lot, and look decent.... say if i just sand it and paint it, will the paint come off real easy?

if you planning on keeping the boat forever that should be fine and the paint SHOULD stick but if you ever plan on getting ant kind of resale out of it you should really think about spending a little more time and effort on it rustolium is a fine paint to paint you trailer with but i would really consider somthing better fro the boat it's self
