Re: Painting aluminium boat..where did it go wrong
Painting aluminum can be tricky. Any bare aluminum needs a special primer on it. You need it real clean. Any paint that can be left on, only needs regular primer. If it bubbled, it seems to me either it got wet, bare metal wasn't properly primed, or it wasn't clean. My first paint job on my Crestliner lasted for about 10 years, over old paint, but primed. Then I added a top and some other pieces, and the paint didn't harden properly, When you washed it, after 2 years, the rags would come out paint colored. So I repainted it without primer, and it started chipping down to my first paint job. It got wet, and wasn't warm enough when I painted. But after 14 years, that first paint job I did properly is still stuck real well. The prep makes the difference.
