painting aluminum rub rail????

I am just wondering how I should go about preping the aluminum rub rail on my boat before i paint it. Or maybe painting isnt the answer. . it is very nasty looking and i just wanted to go ouver it with some white that i will be repainting the rest of the upper portion with??? Any help thanks

paint's not going to stick very well to aluim. without using an acid etch primer, try a regular Scotch pad (dishes) works wonders, then use car wax to keep looking good- It's a cheap way out!

I was going to suggest a light sanding but I have used scotchbrite pads on many occasions with good results.You will need to get a stronger purpose pad than the one for dishes.There are many different grits.You can coat it with penetrol after you clean it up with the pad .Just wipe it on with a rag.
