I'm in the process of painting my 14' aluminum
boat, I just finished the interior. I used water based exterior paint with 2 coats of primer. Worked great. Now I want to do the exterior of the boat but I'm not sure what kind of paint to use. I need something that will hold up in the water. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Painting an Aluminum Boat

Hello Springbok

I recently stripped and repainted my 16' aluminum boat. I primed it with zinc chromate primer, used for bare metal, then painted the entire boat with marine polyurethane paint. I used Valspar but Interlux also makes a very good product. It goes well and flows evenly to make a very slick, nice looking finish.
I have now waxed it and have a nice shine that is easy to keep clean after fishing.

stripping any boat involves a lot of work, or using nasty stuff, but you gotta do it if you want to have a good repaint job.Check out www.napierenvironmental.com for some non toxic paint strippers- they work well and don't burn your skin.
