what would be the cheapest way of going about this? Also do I need to sand the deck a bunch or just rough it up? My boat is 41 years old so I dont care if its not perfect. I am just tired of the ugly green floor lol. I want to paint it white but everyone advises against it because its so bright and gets so dirty. What color would you suggest? I have a 16 ft. tri-hull do you think a gallon of paint would be enough?

Re: painting boat deck

Difficult to answere.
Latex paint
cheap but wont last, (had to remove it from one of my boats)

Spray can
lasts better than latex but can get pricey depending on coverage

marine polyurethane
pricey but takes much less paint (1 1/2 qt should be plenty) By far the best finish but takes some prep (sanding, priming)

it really depends on what you really want to do. grey is a good color to hide damage and dirt. You can skp some prep with marine poly as long as the surface is clean and scuffed.

Re: painting boat deck

Hi Pkrainert, you asked me what and how much I used in my resto thread, but I'll answer your questions here....

First off in my thread I typed it backwards, should of read 2-part primer and topcoat, not primer and 2-part paint....anyways, my wife manages an auto parts shop and ordered the 2-part primer from one of her distributors, Evercoat was the brand name of it{epoxy primer} and the catalyst. Her/dealer cost was $71.34{gal} and the catalyst was $32.46{qt}. The epoxy topcoat was from Home Deephole and was an epoxy floor paint{1 gal btw} and I can't find it's receipt at the moment, but if I recall properly it was around $40.00
I used about 3/4's of each gallon total{17' bowrider}.

Oh yeah, I also added 1 package of HD's slip stop{can't recall the name atm} to the topcoat{1 pk per gal- $6.00} sand I believe it was/is...seems nice underfoot. Best to you with it.

I agree on 'some' whites being too reflective, I went with grey myself for the same reason
Drewpster stated...hides well!

I would porobably be painting a 12ft by 4ft area at most how many cans do you think I would need of spray? I will just go with gray, it should cover better than white over the green anyways.

You could go with the old tried and true "cheapy method" and apply a couple coats of Rustoleum. 1 gallon of white and a quart of black will run you about $40, then you can mix up what ever shade of gray you want,,, and have left over paint for touch-ups . For an anti-skid surface, sprinkle some sand onto the second to last coat before it sets, remove loose sand, and then paint over the sand with your final coat to lock it in.

I haven't done this, but was considering it. A word of caution, Rustoleum takes a long time to dry before it gets hard, it stays soft a lot longer than other paints. I would plan on applying a coat every 1-2 days and then let it sit 2-4 weeks before taking the boat out. I'm guessing you will need 3 coats for sufficient coverage and 3 weeks+ before you can use the boat again.

This isn't the best option, but it's probably the most economical, best bang for the buck.
