Hope that nobody cares that I've started a new thread, but it's a new topic, so it seems appropiate.

A friend and I are currently trying to restore the controls for our '78 Evinrude ... the white finish, although it was clearly nice at one time, is now pitted and unattractive. We want to repaint it.

The original finish was one of those durable, tough ones that seemed as though it had an enamel finish.

Look at Tengals123's work from his share-a-project:
Before:

"These parts have been cleaned, sanded, cleaned, cleaned and cleaned again.":

"Primer time. Two coats. Now to come.......spray filler, sand, clean, topcoat, sand, clean final topcoat.":

"now, time for a little filler.":

"1st fill and sand, one more to go!":

"1 more sand and topcoat to go. Ordered new modern Mercury decal for motor and control box.":

And his results are amazing:

Not even sure if we can compete with that work, but I don't see why we can't do a good job. I've some experience painting, and I've seen good results when it's done right.

But does anyone have any idea as to what paint to use? Primer? Filler? (<-never used filler before) ..

Anything that can be used from spray cans?

We'll see how this goes.

I can get pics of what I'm working with, if desired.

Thanks,
-Alheim

You can get lots of good products in spray cans nowadays. I've used a lot of the Dupli-color stuff and have been pleased with it. They make a nice filler/primer too, to help fill the sand marks and minor imperfections. If there are large nicks you might need to use some spot putty. Ideally it would be nice if the final coat included some hardener but no reason some clear lacquer won't work just fine.
One thing about it...it's a small piece. If you aren't satisfied you can do it over and not knock yourself out.

We bought some Rustoleum Primer, and High-Gloss Enamel White. Looks like good stuff - I'll post pics when we're done.

Nice job alheim, But why does it say Mercury, when you have an Evinrude?

Ah, Mark, you probably just didn't notice where I wrote 'Look at Tengals123's work from his share-a-project:' - so yeah, that's his, not mine ..
