Hi guys i have a 16 foot bowrider sitting on a galvanized trailer thats in great shape i wanna paint it im going to use a spray gun from HF and a Air compressor. What steps are needed to prep the trailer, Im looking at a powder coat and maybe a clear coat. also where do you suggest getting paint and what type?

What have you used to paint your trailer? Any comments or suggestions are welcomed.

If you want to keep the galvanizing but want to touch up some rust spots, they make a rattle can cold galvanizing compound

Thanks man how much longer you think b4 you will be able to tell? I figure i have about 3 weeks before i start.

Unfortunately it may be months to years before we will know.
If well kept, plain old paint can look fine for a few years before it starts to coming off in sheets!

The Aluminum Primer idea is an educated guess based on the thought that Zinc and Aluminum are just one up and one over on the periodic table, both form surface Oxides in similar manners and are problematic to paint.

Zinc Chromate Primer may be another option.

I did another search and just found This.

Play with the boat and the wheel, leave the galvanized alone. Just isn't worth the prep time, expense, unknown results, and extremely toxic chemicals you will need to use.

I'm just thinking out loud here and I'm no paint expert, but isnt the galvanization rough? Even if you can find a paint that will stick to it, it will be rough and never really shine. I'm all for matching equipment but I think this is a lost cause and in the end your going to wish you had not tackled this project. Sanding the galvanization off is not a good idea. It offers far better protection than the paint will and it is hazardous to your health. Paint your boat if you want but don't mess with the tailer in my opinion.

Thanks guys this is why i asked so as for now ill do everything but paint and ill look for a trailer that i can afford to have powder coated a somewhere down the road. I was gonna do it but its to expensive to use the cold cure and then the heat cure would need a giant oven lol

Q. Will RustGuy? Rust Converter work on galvanized surfaces?
A. Yes! Our formulas will work on ANY rusted metal surface including galvanized.

That's a good choice. I'd like mine to match as well, I've seen a lot of really nice trailer restorations on here, but my 1987 galvanized trailer doesn't have a spot of rust on it, except for some surface rust on the coupler. Might as well leave well enough alone.
