Hello all,

First time poster here. Great to see a dedicated MFG forum!

I inherited a 1960 MFG Niagra which is in dire need of some new skin. The deck is to the point now where buffing and waxing are pretty much of no use (oxidation), and the hull has yellowed to the point of embarrassment. The deck has some minor damage to the fiberglass (where my grandather pulled away from the dock still tied up, resulting in some cracking, decided that the best place for a fire extinguisher was screwed INTO the hull, etc).

When I visited the classics section of the Detroit Boat Show last year, a very nice gentleman told me I was almost better off going with a really nice paint job, rather than going the gelcoat route again. I'm all about keeping the original look of this gal going, but from what I've seen for quotes so far, I doubt my budget could handle getting the gelcoat reapplied. Any comments on this topic are appreciated.

Now, the best quote I've gotten so far has been $2500 to get the deck painted that lovely shade of red, the hull white and the engine a coat of white.

Does anyone happen to know of a shop which does excellent work with both marine fiberglass repair and paint/gelcoat, near Detroit, MI? I'd like to come in under $2500 as like most folks in Michigan, I'm cash strapped, but that may be a pipedream.

I thought I might also attach some images of the current state of things with this ol' gal. The engine is not original (1976 Evinrude 85 HP) as the original took a dip in the Detroit River, never to be seen again, and the 70 HP Johnson that was put on it after that was beyond repair.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Click the thumbs for the full size. Didn't know the forum was locked down to six images per post, so sorry about the bumps all...

why not try some toilet bowl cleaner first on the hull ?
then some wax it it comes out the way you want it.

Yeah I've actually followed that tutorial before, when I first got the boat. It oxidized so bad every winter, despite any effort on my part, that I had to repeat that every spring. It's the point now where I'm starting to see a honeycomb pattern on the deck near the stern. I'm running out of material to buff away now.

As for the hull, it's in such a shape that you can start seeing distinct fiber patterns of the glass. It's not the point where the coating over the glass is completely gone, but it's starting to get pretty rough.

I really do just lack the facilities and the time to get the work done required, on my own.

Hey andrew, Im glad to see that im not the only MFG owner around Detroit!!! I have yet to find any type of a body/hull shop around here, but that is kinda low on my list as of now. My boat hull is starting to yellow alittle, the white is no longer white. I wonder what product did you use to try to clean up the hull? I havent ventured into this area yet, and would like to start off with something that may work the first time around. Thanks!
