Painting hull: Registration sticker?

Question for everyone. I have only painted new home-built boats in the past. I am now painting a 1985 fiberglass boat. I will replace the registration numbers and the manufacturer decals, but I don't know what to do with the registration sticker that is good through 2008. Can these be removed and replaced without damaging them? My gut is telling me know and these sticker are designed to self-destruct if anyone attempts to remove them.

I could mask it off and paint around it, but that sounds cheesy.

I just painted mine this year. I removed the sticker (in tiny pieces  ) then ordered replacement stickers from the DNR for a $2.50 "Replacement Decal Fee". You should be able to find the forms online thru your state's DNR website.
