Painting my outboard??

I've read many threads on here about painting outboards but I have a few of my own questions.

I see no problems with painting the engine hood (cowling) because it can be taken off the motor easily.

The question I have is....Do I Need to take the covers off of the lower part of the outboard (expose all the motor goods) to paint it Or can I leave the lower covers on and tape everything off and make sure there is no over-spray???

I'm just looking for somewhere to start because the guy I bought this motor from decided he wanted to give it a Terrible paint job

Thanks

Re: Painting my outboard??

are you looking just to cover scratches and blemishes, or are you going for a show-room finish?

is the boat kept in water, or is it a trailer queen?

do you have spray equipment, or are you leaning toward rattle cans?

long story short - a paint job is only as good as its preparation.
if you sand down to bare aluminum, you will need a self-etching zinc primer

I guess it depends on how good a job you want to do, I have just done an old evinrude but I striped it down completely to do the job right.

Re: Painting my outboard??

The paint job does not need to be show room condition but I do want to put more then minimal effort into it. The motor will be not kept in water, just when it is in use. I will be using rattle cans for prime/paint.

I was wondering if I could get a good paint job if I left it together since I'm not mechanically inclined to take the whole motor apart. What should I make sure to tape off so I don't get paint inside the engine/cover, etc.??

Sean-nos - congrats on the paint job, looks awesome.

pull the cowling and paint that separate from the motor. mask off what your not wanting painted.

since your looking to stay with rattle cans, I would suggest hitting your local PPG paint store for a can of self etching primer, then have them mix up a few cans with hardener in them.

Re: Painting my outboard??

the lower motor is metal of course but the hood cowling is most likely fiberglass or plastic? Is there a different primer I should use for the hood cowling since it is fiberglass or plastic and not metal?

If its Plastic then you should use a plastic Primer before your paint system primer ( plastic adheasion primer then paint primer .. just like doing a plastic bumper ).

If its glass then you can use whatever primer thats used for whatever that paint system requires.
