I have aquired an older aluminum jon boat. I have removed all of the peeling and flaking paint. Do I need to remove all the paint, or can I prime over the old? What type of primer should I use? What type of paint should I use? The boat will end up being camo. I found some jon boat paint in Bass Pro and Cabela's. Could I just use Krylon or rust-oleum? Should I spray, roll, or brush? This is my first aluminum boat and I just don't know. I'm also new to this site. THANKS, GREAT SITE.

Re: painting old jon boat

Primer is made to help paint stick to bare metal. It will stick to old paint well, as long as the old isn't peeling or flaking. Sounds like you have that covered. Rough up the surface all over with a light sanding...grit of your choice. Wash it down and then wipe it down with a vinegar/water solution...about half and half. This etches any bare metal exposed. Rinse it good and let it dry. Then apply any good primer to the bare metal spots, if any. In there aren't any, skip the primer. Acquire your camo paint...check at StuffMart or the Big Box home improvement stores, Krylon is great stuff...and apply the pattern you want. Keep some touch up paint handy. If you roll it on, have someone follow right behind you and lightly brush over what you just applied. Makes a good smooth finish. Spraying works well, too. Whatever is easiest for you.
