I have some corrosion I want to paint before I store the boat for winter.

I know I need a primer. Is there a primer that I can buy at a hardware or auto parts store that will work?

It's tough to get to a Marina during the week.

Any cheapo primer and paint will do. You'll never get it to stick as well as the factory stuff... so paint the ABSOLUTE LEAST AMOUNT of the drive possible. And then try to figure out why your drive corroded and fix that. The BIGGEST mistake I EVER made on my Bravo 3 was sanding off good factory paint on the lower unit, when I just needed to paint about 5 spots. I had to repaint my drive every year after that. (My boat was slipped in freshwater from early March until late October)

if your going all the way back to the ally an'etching primer' should be used as it gets in behind the oxidising that occurs.however i just done mine with hammerite smoothe and have had no problems.don't know if its available in u.s. though.

Actually I would recommend you buy a good primer. Zich Chromate specifically. Then any rattlecan top coat - I like Rustoleum.
