painting question

I have just read 2 books that seem to differ on opinion. One says do NOT roll polyurethane paint & the other seemed to recomend roll & tip. The latter used Awlgrip as an example. Any thoughts?
My boat is 14ft that has been painted with unknown brand that seems in good condition ( no peeling or chipping ) just ugly!
Last question, Should I paint with cap off or put it back together?

Just rolling with a foam roller ( or pretty much anything else ) will leave a lot of air bubbles - hence the tipping part of the deal. By striking the paint with the ends of your brush you lay it down and essentially remove the air.
Please do remember that if this is your first time using a marine grade paint you are going to find it a LOT thinner than ordinary house paint. So don't be surprised when you open the can and start your project.
I'd be tempted to replace the cap before the finish coat. Nothing like doing all that work and have the cap slip and scratch it while you're trying to replace it.
Another word of caution is that your finishd job will be a reflection of your prep work. 90% prep - 10% paint.

I'm a little suprised you say it might seem thin. I thought one comment I read mentioned it would be quite thick. I did spray a small boat once with a Sears Craftsman brand sprayer with I think Interlux paint. Overall pleased with result but a little orange peel I guess. Hoping for a "wet" look on this project.
