Its been awhile since I have been here. I hope all is well. I have a 16' Holiday and LOVE this boat. It went through a little upgrade, as of now it is a resting place for two new motors. It has a 60hp etec and a 6 yamaha. I am wanting to paint the top area (bow) What is the process and best supplies to do this with..

Thank you for all your help

Re: Painting Question

db--

1. how bad is the existing paint? would it need to be stripped to the aluminum?
2. what are your facilities for applying and drying?
3. how comfortable are you working with a 2-part paint system?

sounds like a really nice boat.....and seriously economical to run

Re: Painting Question

The paint is pretty rough, there are a couple of spots that I am going to have to take it down to the bare metal. I have my dads garage that has a heater in it for temp control. This is going to be my first time attempting to paint.. This year is just the top, along the sides and splash well.

I am excited to get out with the new motors. For the test run, we did 40 miles and used about 4.5 gallons..

Re: Painting Question

OK. after you take it to bare metal, you need to spray it with self-etching primer (avail at any auto paint store) within a day or so, before the aluminum oxide starts to form on the freshly clean metal. this is the first step no matter what type of topcoat you decide to use. this will be a deal where you have to mix the paint, hardener and reducer and spray it in a gun. you can get the stuff in spray cans too but you'll go broke at $9-12 /can if you have to do much area. remember that you only need a fine tinting or dusting for this coat, it's just to promote adhesion.

for top coat, the consensusi'm seeing around here is to either go with industroRusto with hardener (enamel, can be brushed/rolled/sprayed) or full-on 2-part marine epoxy from West etc (must be sprayed, need full protective gear). latter will give nicer job and last longer, but the rustoleum can come out looking great if you prep surface right and spray carefully.

this is just a very brief overview. i STRONGLY suggest that you read some of the full-resto threads for more details on painting.
