Spent a week fishing some shallow saltwater flats with my 2004 Johnson 4-stroke and now my skeg is bare metal. Will a can of regular white spray paint work OK to cover it back up? I'm sure I'll prediodically need to touch it up again (I fish a lot of shallows) so looking for a quick touch up method. Not sure if I need to prime it first or what. I don't mind if the color isn';t an exact match as I'll likely be in some shallows again soon enough and it won't look perfect.

Scuff it with 200 grit sandpaper.

Wash with 50/50 solution of vinegar/water.

Paint with zinc chromate primer.

Apply top coat.

sand ALL paint off 100%

use 300 and up grit for nice, smooth finish.

wipe clean with tack cloth.

tell people your motor is a racing motor.

:)

i sanded the paint off my 50hp evinrude just for fun, looks really cool! never have to worry bout the paint chipping again, and its quite an attention getter

west marine seels the paint, omc white and zinc chromate primer. don't really need to sand, just make sure it's cleaned with alcohol and spray with primer, probably will need 2 coats, then 3 or 4 coats of the paint. will look good as new
