clean, dewax, scuff sand, solvent clean, repairs, solvent clean, scuff repairs, solvent clean, prime, finish sand, solvent clean, paint, color sand, solvent wash, paint, color sand, solvent wash, paint. Admire perfect paint job.

In that order.

Clean- no detergents, TSP, or bleach only

dewax- two rags w/ 202 solvent wash, be thorough change rags often

scuff sand- 220grit to haze lightly

solvent clean- compatible thinner with paint system to remove sanding residue, acetone flashes too quickly, two rags- wipe on wipe off.

repairs- fix the stuff you find wrong when you do the sanding. (dings chips crazing ect.

solvent clean- see above

scuff repairs- scuff or level fillers or resins used for repairs.

solvent clean- see above

Prime- use primer compatible with paint system

Finish sand- 320 400 grit or recommended by paint system to level primer.

solvent clean- use compatible solvent that will not damage primer to remove residue.

Paint- use recommended application method by paint system, recommend roll/ tip paint marine polyurethanes.

Color sand- 400+ grits to level paint, remove runs, sags ect.

solvent wash- 2 rags, compatible solvent wont damage paint.

Paint coat 2- see above, thin coat

solvent wash- 2 rags, see above

Paint coat 3- see above

Admire and smile at perfect paint job!

note- do not use dewaxing solvents on primer or paint, it will damage it.

My method...enjoy.:D

Re: painting the deck and the walls of my boat

I'm pretty picky about paint and play with a lot of different types. Last year I painted part of my deck with one kind and part with another. We decided we liked the plain old rustoleum with walnut hull blasting media for grit the best... over the polyurethane with rubber additives... It also heald up just fine too. Will do light gray and splatter paint to match my interior upholstyr colors this time around...

I painted the deck with a roller, no tip and it worked out fine... degrease with something like xylenes r toluene, rough it up with something like 120 or 220 on a sander wipe it down and degrease again and then paint away...

You will notice I noted "perfect paint job"? You may find that professional painters go to even more extent depending on the job. Thats why it is so expensive.
How I alter the steps I use to do a paint job depends on the job. You can certainly get satisfactory results just by scuffing, cleaning and painting. I have done the same myself. I have painted boat trailers using spray cans from Ace Hardware and got good results. One in fact still looks "good" even after five years of use. But in order to get the best results I have ever achieved, I have had to go through all the steps I listed above and more.
The point is to take from it what you think you need and get the results you are looking for. Work clean.
