Painting the gelcoat

I have an old 84, 18 ft Ranger that has oxidation so bad the gel coat is gone but just on the part where the flakes are, if that's what they're called. The white part underneath is fine. My question is: Can this just be painted like a car would be painted and how would it look? Also wondering what the cost of a professional car painter doing this with epoxy paint versus a professional re painting using gel coat? It is an old boat but the interior is good but the finish is just horrible! Thanks for any replies.

Edit: Thanks Ken I'd forgotten about the restoration section.

Re: Painting the gelcoat

There are ways to restore the finish. Check out the restoration section and I would suggest you asking the question there for best responses.
I personally would not paint if there was an option not to.

Re: Painting the gelcoat

Pet pieve #1: People who leave their FG boats out in the weather.

PP #2: Unknowing buyers who purchase PP #1 thinking that gel coat will restore like paint.

If I were to purchase a #1, it would have to be at a significantly discounted price and then paint would be the answer.

Sorry folks, gell coat is not paint and will not restore as paint will.
