One of my winter projects this year will be to try and get my '73 65hp evinrude painted. Was just wondering about color ideas, i know at least the bottom end of the motor was originally painted an aqua green. I was thinking that I would just go straight white and then maybe try to find some decals that would look good. Was also wondering what you all paint your motors with, im talking about just the outside, nothing under the motor cover. Thanks for the help.

BigJo,
I can't help you on the colors. But do have a couple of suggestions. First, lightly sand it and prime it with a reputable brand of primer. second, if you have to sand to bare metal to get it smooth, you MUST use self-etching primer (preferably containing zinc chromate). Third, whatever brand primer you choose, use the same brand paint. 4th, when you get ready to prime, use a misting coat first, then a second misting coat, then 2 normal coats. Wait the specified time on the can between coats. that's very important or when you paint it, the paint will come off of the lower unit when you run it at the lake, guaranteed. DOn't paint unless it's above 70% or if the humidity is too high as specified on the can (super important). I personally like to use duplicolor self-etching primer and automotve single-stage catalyzed paint you mix and spray in a paint gun because it's harder and more durable. I haven't had any paint incompatibility issues with the duplicolor primer. The base coat/clear coat is great, too, but more expensive. And as you know, a boat motor WILL get scratched up if you use it quickly so the single-stage is fine to me.
good luck,
JBJ

BigJ08,
Help, I am in the process of making a trade here in Pa, my 56 14' aluminum Lonestar with a 30 and a 35hp evinrudes for a 14' MFG tri-hull bowrider with a '73 65hp Johnson Stinger!

Don't know if the Rudes and Johnsons were the same color in 73 but hope mine is not original!

Reason I said HELP is I brought the boat home........ wife was raking leaves and the first thing I heard from her was "Can you paint it?"

The boat is dark pink, more like "Barney Purple" the motor is John Deere Orange and the trailer is blue! I'm in trouble me thinks!

The paint on the motor looks solid, I hope this isn't the original color! Who ever did it took care not to get any on the wiring etc inside the cover.

If you do repaint yours let me know how you make out, I know what is coming up this spring or sooner!

Because my English are not as good as your English, can you describe some things for me?
1.What is a "self-etching primer"?. I know what is the primer but not the "self-etching"
2 What is a "misting coat"? Do you mean a very thin coat?
3.You say about 2 misting coat and then 2 normal. The normal is the colour or you mean 4 coat of primer?
4.What is a duplicolor primer and the single stage paint?
Thank you for your time!

Self etching primer bonds or etches itself to the metal. Its great for aluminum and holds the paint better than regular primer. Also it works better for below the waterline use on drives and outboards.
Zinc Chromate primer is what i use.
The light mist coat at first helps it bond.
Then a second coat is usually all i do.Then 2 to 3 coats of paint.
Duplicolor is automotive paint. It does ok but i have better luck with Tempo brand marine engine paint and primer.
Here is a list of OEM match colors...

No, but I looked it up. Beautiful! 20 years ago I made a list of 'life goals' and one of those was to live on an island. I haven't made it there yet, but I just bought a cottage on a small island, so maybe someday!
