Painting the transome & patched spots

Hi all,I need to do some painting on my "68 SeaKing".I've had to patch some areas on the outside of the hull and to the transome.The patch work came out smooth,but the trans.someone else had been painted before with what I do not have a clue.It was flaking off in most spots but now it is all sanded down smooth.What type primer/paint should be used?automotive materials?Is gelcote a type of paint?Thanks in advance for any advice!
