I'm repainting my boat trailer.I wiped it down with acetone ,wire brushed it with brush on a drill, sanded it then wiped it down with acetone again. When I wiped it after sanding the paint started to peel up in spots.I re sanded and now wonder what to wipe it down with before primering it.Don't want to use the acetone again.Besides just plane warm water any suggestions.Want to primer tomorrow.

Have you thought about renting a sand blaster?

Re: Painting trailer question

When you said it peeled off, did the paint surface start to lift and look like 'orange peel'?
If so, then the paint you have on your trailer is an enamel not a cellulose based paint. It has reacted against it. Acetone is used to thin cellulose paint and clean up brushes, etc that have had cellulose paint sin them.
You can put enamel over cellulose, but you can't put cellulose over enamel as it reacts.
Stop using the acetone to clean the surface down and use something like a paint thinner to clean the surface prior to painting.
If you are using something like a Rustoleum brush on enamel you should be alright. If you are going to use an automotive cellulose paint, then you will have to apply a sealer coat first to stop reaction.

I am not a pro by any stretch but if the paint is peeling with just an acetone wipe I would think it was painted before and the prep was not done right or something . I would strip whatever ain't sticking and reprep .. Is it a galv or metal trailer ?
Just thinking ..

If you're using a wire wheel(rust polishing tool) to remove rust, scrape the wire wheeled area with a screw driver...is it brown and rusty again? If it is, I suggest spending as little as possible on supplies.

I'm with bondo and would add using tack cloth if your really wanting to be anal, otherwise start shooting some paint.

The Enamel paint, like most paints, will take a few days to harden properly, so be gentle with it in the meantime.
If you want to wax it, like you would your car, then by all means do it. It will help preserve the paints surface and maintain the shine...just like waxing your car and boat.
