Painting Vinyl Seats-?

Recently, I decided to freshen the vinyl seats on my 16 foot Larson.

Not a boat that I want to spend a lot of money on, I decided that it would really freshen the look of the boat to pain the vinyl seats. Having perused a few automotive forums, I heard SEM products talked well about, so I went online, purchased two cans of white vinyl paint, a can of dark blue vinyl paint, and a can of "plastic adhesion enhancer". Total bill, with shipping: $50.

I followed the directions expressly. They aren't on the can- you have to go to their website in order to find out how to prepare the surface. I did the best job I could do cleaning the seats, then sanded them with 400 grit, put down two coats of the adhesion enhancer, and then two or three thin coats of the color.

The results were great! I did this a week ago, and was amazed at the results. I was able to finish the rear jumpseats and the cushions in the bow area, but had to leave town on business for most of this past week. Well, I went out to look at them when I got back Friday, and noticed that the paint has dozens of scratches! We have a problem with feral iguanas down here in South Florida, and apparently they, or perhaps birds...had been crawling on the seats [no cover, yet]. Their claws are sharp, but they shouldn't be able to scratch the paint like that! In fact, I used my own fingernail to see if I could make a scratch, and sure enough just touching the paint causes it to peel right off.

?

What now? Has anyone else tried doing this? WHERE did I go wrong~?

We painted two bucket seats in our Renken in about 1989. I don't know what paint we used, it was definately out of a spray can, and knowing my father, it was the least expensive paint there was. It lasted great, didn't scratch up or fade, and looked good when we sold the boat in 1994. And I sure don't remember sanding the seats down at all. I'll send my dad an e-mail and ask if he remembers.

I used the Colorbond Sea Ray Eggshell dye on my seats. It matched the original color perfectly, and I can't scrape it off using a screwdriver. It just digs gouges into the vinyl.

I bought a can from Bass Pro Shop to try it then ordered enough to redo the whole boat. Website is here:

My father informed me that he got the spray paint at an automotive store. It was for vinyl seats, and the prep work was not very complicated. Certainly less than what you had to do.

Here is a DupliColor video on painting vinyl. Certainly no sanding in this one. It seems pretty brainless according to the video. You have to keep in mind this video is made by DupliColor, so it will be biased.

Hmm!

I must have done something wrong! I can't tell you how EASY it is to remove the blue paint from the seats. I used my finger nail to remove a few quick sections tonight.

SEM? I thought they were good quality? Well, I did some research, and despite what their website says about "vinyl repainting", you apparently need to use a different product from "plastic adhesion promoter"! Their website has two versions: One that you need to use "plastic adhesion promoter", and another that details use of ANOTHER product: #3836 "Sand Free". Basically, if you look at the product only, the website directs you to the product that I bought. But the instructional section of the website has more information...that isn't in the product website at all! This site tells you to buy a different preparation product, so I can only wonder if I have used the right stuff? What the hell? I spent $17 on that can of plastic adhesion promoter!

Hello?

This is bul**it. Bul**it, bul**it, bul**it!

Why all the hassle? I bought several cans of white vinyl paint from Home Depot and sprayed my back to back seats. They look great and the paint is very flexible worked really well and did not wear off that I can tell all summer.
