Re: painting

Is your boat painted or is it gelcoat? Are you trying to re-do existing clear or applying new? I guess we could use some details on what exactly you're trying to accomplish.

Re: painting

It should be ok to use laquer.

I would use an acrylic myself ( they sell 2 part acrylic clear in spray cans that gives a fairly good finish ).

Re: painting

what are you saying that the clear will damage my hull?

Nope,... I'm just sayin' that clearcoatin' on a boat never holds up, 'n never Looks like ya think it's gonna...

Why do ya wanta clear coat it,..?? Shine,..??

If so, Sand, Buff, Polish, 'n wax it...

Um.. why not ? We are talking some kinda 2 part clear and not Gel clear right ?

Ive never had issues with it ( aside from not wrap clearing over base coat )..

You have to sand and buff almost anything that Looks Pro .. Including clear..

Re: painting

Clears tend to yellow, so if you use it over whites or other light colors you will see the color change rather easily. Plus lacquer isn't one of the most durable and water resistant paints around. As far as it harming the hull…no it won’t, they are very compatible.

i have already done the buff and wax it lost what little gloss i got first time i took it out i am a auto body tec so i know what a good coating of clear will give me , the thing i don't know is how the cemecals in the clear will react with my gel coat. i realy don't whant to have the stuff raise or break down.

Basic "auto clear" is not lacquer. (lacquer has been off the regular auto market for years) Spraying a clear coat over any get-coated finish is not the proper route. Painting is all in the prep and if your applied the proper restoration methods to the existing finish the results may surprise you. We have seen many boats 30, 40 and even 50 years old that the finish was restored by just proper effort.

Re: painting

Gelcoat is NOT like paint. In order to restore it, you may have to wet sand and then compound and polish. You can apply Arylic enamel Clear Coat over gelcoat without any problems but...In a marine environment it is usulally not a durable finish and will in the end not be what you were looking for. As Bob VT states the correct restoration process for Gelcoat IS the way to go. If not then Paint the entire boat with a quality paint to get the shine you want.

No its not I would agree .. but there are some similarities .. wetsanding and buffing is one of them. ( sometimes needed .. well most times for a patch and most times for a clearcoat application )

In order to restore it, you may have to wet sand and then compound and polish.

Yes.. you may have to sand ( wet or dry ) and buff to get that luster back from gel. Dunno without pics and more information. ( I have only sanded a boat to get rid of scratches and not the whole thing Ever .. compounds are there for a reason ).

Why ? .. automotive paint is BCCC .. why would a marine application be any different? I have an 98 olds that has been subjected to weather and 90 mph duration for years and years ..the clear on the car is much worse off then on a boat.. .. Why not clear coat with automotive clear then ?

As Bob VT states the correct restoration process for Gelcoat IS the way to go. If not then Paint the entire boat with a quality paint to get the shine you want.

Again..without pics or more info .. why is this the right resto process ? .. I mean if the guy wants to clear his boat then let him ( we are talking 2 part clear right.. ).

YD.

PS. I dont mean to hammer on anyone..but this is a Choice and not a detrimental application ( I will Spray clear on an above waterline application any day without worries ).
