Part # for 1958 Johnson 7.5 Shift Dog

Is the shift dog for a 1958 Johnson / Evinrude 7.5 (& 5.5) the same as a 1956-57? I show Part # 376078 for 1956 but don't have a '58 Parts Book.

Did that shift dog carry through the last of the 1964 5.5s? The 1965 6-horse?

Long answer = yes

If buying new get BRP 329795.

According to my common parts manuals the clutch dog is the same in the 1956-57 5.5-7.5 hp (BRP 333518) and the 1958-1979 5.5-6 hp and 1958 7.5 hp (BRP 329795) are the same. Both are still available new for $85 and $103, respectively. Yes its odd the older and less used dog is cheaper.

However, I tried to replace a 1972 6 hp clutch dog with a 1956 7.5 hp dog this spring. Both looked visably the same except (as I recall) the lobes may have been reinforced on the 6 hp. I couldn't use the 1956 because it was worn (didn't know until I opened the gearcase) so I replaced the prop shaft and clutch dog with a 1955. Still works great on my buddy's boat.

It's just as well that I was outbid on e-Bay for the dog; it wasn't exactly the right one for me anyway.
