This is my first boat & motor and don't know much about working on the motor.

I am missing a part that has something to do with the idle and or advance. The engine runs good but won't idle.

The part is a small nylon round bushing that sits on a nylon shaft. The bushing is missing and I can't find what it is called in order to get the part. No local dealers here will help with this old of a motor.

I have pictures that I would be more than happy to send. If you guys can identify it, I would be more than happy!

Ironwolfjt
Welcome to the board, make sure you come back to this tread and let us know how you make out. I have a 1975 15 HP which is exact same engine with a different CARB. I have no problem getting part from any Evinrude/Johnson dealer. If you know where the part goes just go to the dealer and tell what you need and ask if you can help then find part on microfich or CD. All dealers that I go to say sure. If possible go when they are not busy, durning the week or early saturday. Middle of day saturday when have 4 people waiting to buy parts not the best time.

I can not place what part you are decribing. Are you sure have the low speed idle adjusted right, Lean/Rich knob on the front?? Is the idle speed set too low, Knob on port side of engine just behind tiller handle?? Only other thing I can think of is cam follower near the Carb. Tell us where the part is located.

Really the same motor still made today as a Johnson 9.9HP with a only few changes in spark systems.

Hey Boatist,
All the adjustments are right...the motor runs great! Just won't idle...I think you described the part...

"Cam follower near the carb" that pretty much describes it.
There is a large cam\wheel under the top of the motor and not far from it is a nylon shaft that is supposed to have a small wheel\bushing (nylon) on it. That in turn rubs against the large cam\wheel when the throttle is turned. This shaft has a place for a 'C' clip on top to hold the wheel\bushing on it.

THAT wheel\bushing is missing...I know, I was running the boat\motor in the lake, adjusting the carb and had it running perfect when I looked and the wheel\bushing shot off the motor and into the lake. The motor then would not idle after that....it would still run but at WOT and not as it did before the wheel\bushing flew off.

The BIG name dealers around here don't care about the little guy so I have to find other avenues...am trying one this morning as soon as they open. I will describe it as a cam follower along with some pictures I took of it over the weekend.

Hey Vahevala,
I got my "little" problem solved. Went to a salvage marine place today and luck would have it, they had what I needed.

You were right...cam follower. It came in three packages. The nylon mount, nylon roller, and an adjustment screw.

I installed it but will have to wait to try it out.

I'll give an update when I do.

Ironwolfjt
Glad you got the part your need. Adjust the idle mixture Rich/Lean knob slowly for best idel and the idle speed knob on port side for idle speed.
Have Fun.
