Part number problem

Back story: Replaced 27 year old thermostat on my '81 'Rude 50 now my overheat alarm comes on intermitetly, I know there are no obtructions and the pump is new and it pees a straight stream, alarm turns off after 1-2 minutes.
While the alarm is going off you can hold your hand on the head for 5-10 seconds, it is really warm but not hot so I think the temp switch is bad.

Looked on the Evinrude site, shows part #386686 but all the parts I can find with that number have 2 leads, yellow and a ground, mine has one, yellow.
I found one that looks right but the part number is 584592, is this a superseded number or not the right part.

DO I order the right part number and just ground the extra lead or get the one that looks like the right part?

Re: Part number problem

386686 is still the correct part number. It has one tan wire like all the regular temperature switches and has not been superseded. It shows as number 78 on the 1981 50HP cylinder and crankcase diagram: http://shop.evinrude.com/

Re: Part number problem

Ask powerheadkit.com if their's is the picture of the OMC/BRP part. They also show this one. Usually a new number is assigned to a part when a modification is made, so this would be unusual.

Black is a ground in OMC wiring, so that would seem all right to me. My older switches had more exposed metal on the sides where the rubber cover is on that one. I suppose the added ground is to make up for that.

I had the same concern with the 2 wires a while back and in fact the black is ground. Just bolt it to head cover bolt nearby. Mine works great.
