Hello there,

I'm looking at a 19' boat with a 1989 Mercury Black Max 200hp...The motor started right up today, in a tub, and at high idle pumps plenty of water...when he brought it back to idle, the pee-ing slowed and stopped. The owner said something about that model being a "cold engine" and that the peeing at idle only worked once the motor warmed up. He said he put a new impellor in, in the fall. I took a compression test and all cylinders were 120 give or take a couple pounds, some 118, some 122. He also mentioned he did away with the injection and mixes the fuel. Seems to run and rev up smoothly, do you guys know of any inherent problems with these engines, or are they a dependable motor. Also the hood is hinged at the rear and swings open from the front, does anyone know if there is supposed to be a seal of some sort at the top, seems like rain could get in....1974 Mako and this engine $3,500...what say you guys?

Thanks,

Bill

I have basically the same 2.5L and my Urological responses sound the same.....High to low rev urination starting and then tailing off w cold'ish engine is the poppet opening and closing as designed, at mock 2 you would too!!.....Check up not required there. At idle on muffs or lake, mine relives itself in time, perhaps 3, 4, 5 minutes on avg., it'll go. He says it does go in time at idle, did you wait that long'ish?

Not sure about the term "Cold Engine", sounds like it is running as it was designed too. There does seem to be variances in Urology out there due to differing levels of back pressures(LU in the lake verses on muffs) and the actual designs and the like, some go right when started which sounds normal as far as I can tell(But wouldn't be for me), some have stage fright like mine. It gets even worse if there's girl motors around too!!

That question however, pops up a tad bit here and there, and for you, like me, it was nice to have/get a base line on whats what and where and when....agreed. Mine like yours I believe, goes as you descried and sounds quite normal. Flomax not necessary IMO

I have to tap out on the hinge thing but sound like you have a nice deal...I'll take the motor if ya want to dump it?

A lot of those V6 motors will only have a telltale when warm. The thermostats must open for a telltale to be visible.

You will want to rebuild the waterpump anyway, if you buy it. That motor is quite old, as the clamshell was made in the 80s only. Not sure what that Mako is worth. But '74 is pretty old as well. Any idea if the hull is sound?

You can likely get a newer boat for the same $$, if you look around.

Thanks Sam, appreciate the graphic response...I looked high and low for a Model or Serial number and couldn't find one. Is there a secret spot I can find it. I put his info in Crowley and got three possibilities 1200412GD, 1200422GD, & 1200D12GD, but finding the real thing would have been good. We didn't run it long enough to warm up to see if the tell tale story worked out. I'll keep you in mind, in my will on the engine, he says the boat goes in excess of 50mph, we'll see about that as well.

Chris, the boat is solid as a rock, it used to be a Greenpeace whale chase boat, so the story goes. I've been looking around I my area for something similar, and all that seems to be available in that range in junk.

My pleasure...try the welch plug up on starboard head by the flywheel or located on the lower starboard side of the engine block or on the starboard side of the swivel bracket.

Dang, just the stories that boat could have is worth it. Save the whales dude!!
