I have a 1977 2.0l 175hp mercury v6 outboard. It has been siting for quite a while (think tree growing in Hull of donor boat) i am kicking around the idea of rebuilding the motor for my starcraft islander. But i am having a hard time figuring out what is interchangeable and what isn't. The motor has no water in it, turns over, and has the remains of some oil in the cylinders so i dont think it is a total loss. Can i use any 2.0 parts as far as carb kits and other internals? Or are they pretty year specific? What else should i look at as far as getting this motor back in operation?

Re: parts availability

Is it even worth rebuilding? I got a quote of over $300 for a carb kit!!

Re: parts availability

Kick it over and see if you have compression and go from there, if you have comp i would verify spark.

Ignition and cyl/pistons can add up quickly

Carb kits for that motor are $18.00 - $30.00 each carb kit from what i found.

Re: parts availability

A lot of the 2.0 parts will interchange but that block is different than all the other 2.0 engines, and trim system is slow and sluggish at best in great working order.

Re: parts availability

I just picked up a second motor thst is a 1976 175hp. This one i heard run and will go on my boat. I will use the 77 for parts. Where can i look to find out what parts interchange? Not just between these two but across all 2.0's?

Re: parts availability

The only parts that wont interchange with later models are: flywheels(thickness), stator (thickness & amps), starter and flywheel(depends on model as they made a fine tooth flywheel), wiring harness(14pin vs 8pin), trim system, midsection, block and adapter plate, cylinders heads(bolt pattern), control box
