I just purchased a Gamefisher 15HP outboard motor from ebay. The seller said the motor still ran, but wouldnt idle. He said that the cylinder walls are slightly scored. I figured i could get away with honing the cylinder, but i think i may need to buy pistons and a few gaskets for it. I was wondering if sears even makes pistons for this model any more. The model number is 225. 581501. the serial number is 6594. If anybody could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

I check sears website and they no longer carry the pistons, or really any other parts for it, any idea any other places? thanks

I cant find the exact piston for the motor. what size would it need to be? If some 1 could give me a direct link to where its located it would be greatly appreciated.

Before you go much further, it would be a good idea to figure out just how much you're willing to spend to fix this thing up. The parts you need are all obsolete, so finding them is going to take some serious hunting, and they are going to be far from cheap.

I have no idea how much you paid for this outboard, but do check the prices for a good-running used Johnson or Evinrude 15 hp outboard before starting in on this.

Even if you find the pistons, rings, and other parts for this engine, the fact that the cylinders are scored is an indication that the engine was run very hot or without oil. You could have other internal damage that will add even more to the cost of putting it back on the water.

I'm guessing that, before you're finished, you'll have spent what it would cost to find a 15 hp from Johnson or Evinrude that is already running just fine.

Think about it.

Re: Parts for Gamefisher 15HP

I found a piston kit last night for a 1989 force 15 hp... the kit is 130$ and i believe that includes 2 pistons. A ring kit cost about 20 dollars. I dont know if this is what i was looking for or not. If somebody could cue me in as to if these are the right parts, it would be greatly appreciated. So as i see it right now its at least 150. i only payed 120 for the motor so i dont really know if its worth fixing, now that you say that. I should beable to get that out of it again if i throw it back on ebay. my uncle is a mechanic so he can fix it for free, i just need to buy the parts. thanks for showing

I don't know if those are the right pistons for your outboard, either. I'm not even sure how you'd find out, but I'm not a Force person. You'd want to make sure they were the right ones in advance, though, for sure.

If you can get the engine running at all as it is, you'll be able to get what you gave for it, I'm sure. Running perfectly, you're talking about an outboard worth about $400-500 at best, and that might be more than you can get in your local area. I noticed on eBay that there were a couple that said they ran that sold for about $250, so...

I hate to be discouraging, but the reputation isn't so strong for those engines. Now, a nice Evinrude or Johnson 15 hp from the same vintage as yours will bring a good price. Lots of people buy those to fix them up and sell them when they can get one cheaply. I know a guy who actually makes pretty good money doing it.

But, the minute you have to do a teardown and replace pistons, etc, the cost just keeps going up. Pretty soon you have more into the engine than it's worth.

Another option is to find another one like yours that is running properly, and keep yours for parts.

Re: Parts for Gamefisher 15HP

Allright..... i think i will probably just have to put it back on ebay then. I am an 18 year old kid that loves fishing. the problem is that we have an aluminum boat, but no outboard motor. i dont have a ton of money, so i cant afford a nice johnson or evinrude. I hope i will be able to get close to what i payed for it (120) I didnt have to pay anything for shipping so yea... just curious, how much would it cost to get a fixable johnson or evinrude? i really really want an outboard that i can troll with. I have been looking around at garage sales and stuff, but most motors i find the people want 500-600 dollars. I thank all of you for your help, and if you have any suggestions on maybe how to get more money out of it when selling on ebay, please do tell. Thanks so much,
Josh

IMO , you should keep that motor and get your uncle to show you how to work on it .
As a learning experience , it would be priceless .

As to the economics of repairing that Force versus buying a running 15 hp , in my area they generally go for ~ $700 - $900 , depending on brand and year .
Although you can occasionaly find them cheaper , if you are lucky .

$120 for the engine , $130 for the pistons , $20 for the rings .
Your still at half the price of a running engine , and , gaskets are not that pricey .
Also , check your reed valve while you have it torn down .
This is also the time to rebuild the carb and replace the impeller .
Before you start wrenching , get a FACTORY service manual , not one of those generic Clymer/Seloc ouiji boards .
EBAY is full of manuals , last time I looked , and parts manuals , also .

All said and done , with free labor/instruction , you might have ~ $400 in it to do it right .
Still cheaper than buying a good running unit , and , WAY cheaper than buying new .
Plus you get some mechanical experience out of the deal .:)

I think you should sell the Force and consider a 5.5 to 10 hp Evinrude /Johnson from the 50s or 60s.These motors are sweet runners simple to work on still readily available ,have a nation wide dealer network many of which still stock routine parts and many routine parts are available right here on iboats.Just checked some I was watching final bids ranged from $170 to $330 the $170 was a 10 hp that had "good compression, should run"
the $330 was a nearly new looking 57 10 hp that ran.Given good care these motors will be worth as much or more in 5 or 10 years.

Do you have the owner's manual with parts list?
