Parts help please

On my 1981 Johnson 175 J175txcim.
I need the inner and outer exhaust cover gaskets.The BRP site shows a different inner gasket for the 175 verses the 235 HP.The outer cover gasket is only listed for the 235 HP motor.Also the square figure 8 looking seal that goes on the bottom of the exhaust housing is only listed for the 235.
I want to make sure i order the correct ones but the BRP site is a little confusing.
Any help from you John-Rude techs would be great!

Depends on the cover, bubbleback or flat? The 1981 235 is a big bore crossflow, the rest are small bore 3.5" in 1981, I believe.

Its the flat exhaust cover Ezeke, Thats what has me confused because the diagram shows the slanted cover.I want to replace all the exhaust cover gaskets.I have a leak that leaves exhaust stains on the starboard side of the mid section just under the lower cowl.Also have had a few drips coming out of the cover bolts.So does the flat back exhaust cover use the figure 8 seal at the bottom?

After looking it over it appears it has no inner housing gasket.Looks like the flat cover bolts to the block? Now i'm more confused..
I can see a trail where it leaks at the bottom left bolt.

You just need the two gaskets that look the same. See the link below for what you will find inside. You don't have any inserts to worry about.

BTW, you should reroute the hose for your telltale up above the engine and back down so you don't get air in your cooling circuit.

Thanks Ezeke! So do install 2 gaskets doubled up in the same location?
I can't find a part number for the outer cover gasket.
Good tip on the tell tale,thanks...
Also is the aviation gasket sealer ok to use on this?

It shows 2 inner cover gaskets on the parts list...#321182..

No look at this picture, it is like what you have. The gaskets are 321435 and 321182. You can use two of the 321182.

Thanks! Completely different diagram than i got on BRP site.
I may just order the complete gasket set from Powerhead kit.com.
79 bucks is not bad for all the engine gaskets.That way i can pull the head gaskets and inspect everything too...

Sparingly, I would use Permatex High Tack Spray-A-Gasket. I spray it on the gasket only, both sides, let it dry a bit and install. I get it at NAPA. It is supposed to be effective to 450? F.

There is not much pressure but lots of heat; thermal expansion puts a lot of tension on those gaskets. I think that is why they use so many bolts.

Thanks! Will pick up some High Tack spray...
As old is this engine is the complete powerhead gasket set looks like the way to go.Never hurts to have extra parts on hand...
Compression is 100 to 105 on all cylinders.I may hold off on the head gaskets but it will be good to already have them.
