I have a '77 Merc 500 and am looking at inquiring one from the early 70's. Just wanted to make sure the parts will interchange as that's what I'm buying the second motor for. Most of it is identical isin't it?

The ignition systems 1975 and older will be different from your motor. The older ones have an ignition driver. The 1977 does not.

I believe the stator is different too. Could be the stator fits the 1975 cut off point also.

I have a 71 Merc500 and was told my stator was compatible with only Merc500s from some of 68 through some of 75.

Yes the stators are different. up through 1975 all they did was charge the battery. 1976 they started driving the ignition.

Re: Parts Interchange

Thanks for the info. Now I'll look deeper into the details of the motor.
