Guys,

I was noticing some wear on my propeller shaft and drive shaft and wanted to see what warrants replacement since these are normally costly, but while I have my lower unit apart, I should consider replacing what I can, but at the same time I don't want to go overboard. One of my main concerns was the propeller shaft shear pin hole. It appears a bit oblong, but I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. When together there is some play in the propeller if you twist it back and forth.

Another part was the driveshaft. It has a shiny wear spot in the middle with a line that has been slight cut. I have some pics attached.

If you want to see the full sized images they and others are loacted at:

Re: Parts Wear Advice

What do the housings look like?

I didn't see any problems with the housings, but I did have a froze needle bearing and froze propeller bearing. I do not think it was for any length of time with those sort of problems. My boat had been sitting for the last 2 years (1 year in the garage and 1 year in the Arizona heat).

After looking at the wear on the driveshaft more, that looks like the portion that would be in the water pump. Although the impeller looked ok, I managed to locate a good condition water pump assembly. It looked like there was allot of wear on the metal parts of mine as well as the seal.
