it's been a while since I've posted here...(no problems) I did some overhauling last summer and over the winter. the boat has been awesome all season until last weekend. it started stalling and didn't want to restart. I got it home and felt kinda dumb because I thought I had just ran it out of fuel. so I mixed up 12 gallons and put it on my big tote to run it in the driveway. it started up and seemed to run just fine. yesterday we took it out to do some fishing, I back the trailer and my wife unloads the boat and putts around the marina, til I return from parking the trailer normally... yesterday I walk up to see my wife and brother paddling the boat towards the dock. she tells me it's running like crap again and won't start. after tying off I pull the cowl to see whats going on. it fires right up and seems to run just fine. seeing how there was plenty of boaters out I figured worst case scenario we'd have to ask someone for a tow and decided to venture out. we made it from the docks to the marina store (about 100yrds) before it stalled and wouldn't restart. I pulled the cowl again, this time to see it was full of exhaust. with the cowl off the engine fired up and ran fine. after a closer inspection I found the rubber exhaust boot had split and was leaking water and exhaust gas and seemed to be suffocating the engine. I band-aid patched it with some over priced duct-tape from the marina and we made it through the day. I've got a new boot ordered. I just thought I'd pass on this story in case anyone ever has something like this happen so they don't over look this and think something major is wrong.

Yes for some strange reason those OB's don't like ingesting their own exhaust... Go figure... Glad you found out the reason and was able to still enjoy the day... :thumb:

Great story. I've had the same problem before albeit not as severe. I only noticed it with the idle settings on why it idles fine and maintains 1000 rpm at the driveway on muffs and yet when in the water it struggles to idle and always dies. And finally, when I troubleshot it while in the water with the cowl off, it starts and ran at idle fine. Turned it off and then replaced the cowl and then it will rough idle again. And yes, it was the exhaust relief boot cracked and leaking exhaust into the engine.

You know how many people have this happen to them and can't figure it out??
But that's the kind of thing that keeps me working.
