Patching Deck

So, I have a 12" x 6" hole cut out of the deck up in the storage area. Now that the area below has long since dried out (and leak fixed), I want to patch the cut out. I figured I could cut a 2' x 2' hole and glass in a new piece of plywood. Will this work OK? (note that this area of deck lies about one foot above the top of the stringers).

Also, I purchased the PL strtuctural adhesive to bond a length of 2x4 to the stringers. Can I use this adhesive to fill the gap around the new plywood prior to glassing in??

Thanks.

Re: Patching Deck

Cut the opening on a bevel, cut the new deck peice so it sits in the opening without falling through. Set the angle on your skillsaw.

I find this second method faster because I'm not great with accurate cuts,

install (screw from the top) corner tabs underneath that the new deck sits on, one in ea corner , then screw and glass new deck on.
Counter drill thru the deck with a slightly bigger bit so when the screw enters the corner tab it draws it up tight to the underside of the deck.

I would cut the hatch peice first, then scribe that outline on the deck rather than trying to fit a hatch to a pre-cut hole.

Re: Patching Deck

if you can get the new wood to stay in place, lay it over the hole so the hole is completely covered. cut a new opening just barely bigger with the bevel'd edge (like a pumpkin lid so the new piece can't drop through). the new wood will drop into place into the hole you just cut. glue it in with pl but don't glob it onto the deck surface. glass it over. or, you can use whatever resin you're using for the glass to glue the 2 together.

fast forward about half way through this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqELnDPR0hQ

Or, if it's up front in storage with no foot traffic...cut a piece of wood to fit, glass or finish the cut piece however you like, and install it as a hatch so you can access that part of the hull again if needed and use whatever space is in there for storage. Wife can never have enough hangars/shoes, I can never have enough storage...cause of hangars and shoes.
