I will be going to Pawleys Island the first week in August. Every year I go I try to get in as much fishing as possible, mainly on the north end at the jettie and have had some luck in the creek catching flounder. For the first time I will be bringing my 14' lund to get out and do some serious fishing. I would like to catch something else other than flounder, although they are tasty. Does anyone have any advice on where to go and what kind of bait to use, I hear live shrimp works well for sea trout but I could'nt find any last year. I thought about going down to Georgetown and fishing there as well. I know this might be a stupid question but could I take my boat out in the ocean past the breakers and fish in the ocean for Mackerel ? Thanks any advice would be help full.

You'll have to pick your day to go out into the ocean. Look for winds less than 15 knots, seas 2 feet or less and bluebird skies and stay within sight of the beach. For mackeral keep an eye out for birds working/diving, usually means spanish macks are underneath. Inshore- live shrimp on a popping cork will get you seatrout and redfish. If you can't find live shrimp buy Gulp! 3" shrimp in glow or nuclear chicken at a tackle store- I've had just as much luck with the Gulp! as live shrimp.

Ok so it is ok to go out in the ocean as long as it is a calm day. I would noy go out very far at all. For mackerel is finger mullet the best bait? I have a casting net and can usuall catch plenty of them or shrimp for those as well? I have a few medium-heavy fishing rods I use for bass fishing with spining reels. Im shure I'll have to beef up the line what lb. do you think is the best? I also have some bait casters that are heavy action rods should I use those? I just want to make shure i'm using the right tackel. Thanks for the tips!

For Spanish Macks, Seatrout and Redfish you will be good with 12lb test on a spinning or baitcasting reel. Just make sure your drag is set light. For macks that are under birds a silver spoon is best, they'll hit about anything shiny.

Re: Pawleys Island fishing

I live and fish in Pawleys Island.

Tons of black drum on fresh shrimp right now. If you can't net your own shrimp then buy from roadside stand or live from perry's in murrells inlet.

Mullet are prolific in the surf in august. Lots of blues, reds and spanish work the schools in the surf just past the midway inlet (north inlet). Walk straight out from the old jetty at low tide and fish the furthest sand bar. Don't worry about keeping your mullet alive since it won't matter. You will mostly catch blues but they are big there.

Specks are in the north inlet as well. I seem to do best with live shrimp under popping cork early in the morning. Early morning also seems to be best for spaniards as well.

Cast sandfleas in the surf for pompano and bull whiting (maybe even a black drum). Cast sandfleas, shrimp or fiddlers around the rocks for sheeps and blacks.

Hey thanks for the advice its always nice to hear from a local. I would like to take a trip off shore as well one day too, you recommend a charter that is not too expensive? The past two years I have chartered the same guy with no luck. What do you think about fishing Georgetown, is the fishing any good down there?
