I have a 1991 VP 500B S/N 4100130727 with a DP-C drive S/N 3102121005 (starboard) and want to properly grease the PDS bearings. The drives were serviced 3 years ago in a boatyard when I bought the boat, but the PDS bearings were not greased from the evidence of the paint and dust on the grease fittings.
There is no maintenance call-out in the Operator?s Manual to lube the zerk on the PDS (flywheel) housing. The paint on the zerks looks original and undisturbed suggesting they have never seen a grease gun.
From the ?Overhauling the Flywheel Housing? procedure in the Workshop Manual, a step says to remove the plug and install a zerk, so did some of these drives come with plugs and some with grease nipples already installed?
I have a few questions:
1) The Workshop spec calls for a ?water resistant bearing grease? in the O/H procedure, but no spec in the ?Chemical? listings. 21347121 doesn?t appear to be for high speed bearings, more for prop shafts and hinges. What did Volvo use?
2) Is there a commercial equivalent to the VP grease used? It?s usually not a good idea to mix grease types in between O/Hs, so should I use a clay base, lithium base, moly base, or ?
3) The O/H procedure says to pack the cavity between the bearings. I have the 2 bearing setup. Should I expect that this cavity is already full (just a few pumps on the gun) or empty if never greased? If empty, how much will it take and is there a risk of damaging the seals if I slowly pump in too much (hand operated gun)? I REALLY don?t want to hydraulically force a seal out of position. It would ruin my whole day?
4) Should I expect slight or moderate resistance to accepting grease? Would it help to run the engine during the procedure?
Thanks for the help. -Rick
