Could anyone tell me what a DVA adaptor does and how it works in conjunction with a peak voltage meter? Can a DVA adaptor be used with a regular digital multi-tester? How is the stator charge coil test done using a DVA adaptor? I'm looking for the specs to do a DVA voltage and resistance test on my stator. I have a chart from Outboard motors.com but my motor does not seem to be listed. My motor is a 1987 Evinrude XP150 with a 35 amp alternator (Model E150STLCUR). The chart lists the following: 150 - 175's '85-'91 CD3/6 9 amp. crossflows, and 150 - 175's '88-'90 CD6 35 amp Loopers. My engine is neither. Any ideas?

Re: Peak Voltage DVA Adaptor

A DVA adapter is used with a regular multi-tester to turn it into a Peak Voltage Meter. A DVA Adapter + multi-tester or Peak Voltage Meter measures the maximum voltage on an AC signal. Most multi-testers mearly average it out. So say you have a 10 volt pulse for .1 seconds every 1 second, the peak reader will read 10 volts while the multi-tester will something like 1 volt.
Iboats carries CDI #511-9773 DVA Adaptor, which is relatively inexpensive. There's now also Electronic Specialties #640 DVA Adaptor which sells for considerably less, but not from Iboats.

I hope this explains the DVA adapter business.

Thanks very much for the response that answers my question. I will have to track down a DVA adapter.

Muchco

Try also www.esitest.com for a DVA adapter.

For another explanation and demostration, use a voltmeter and rapidly touch and release one of the leads. The faster you do this, the higher the average voltage will read on the meter, even though the battery has a full 12 Volts. The slower you do this, the lower the overal voltage.

The DVI adapter "stores" the peak voltage long enough for the voltmeter to read it accurately.
