pee hole/impellor/thermostat question

Got my 75 40 hp evinrude running after istalling a carb kit. It runs good, but it tool like 10 seconds before any water came out the pee hole. I let it run for less than a minute and felt the water coming out of the hole and it was hot, about like hot dishwater, for those old enought to remember what life was like befor dishwashers. so then I felt the block and it was hot too. Not really really hot but hotter than I liked, so I shut it down. I started it about 10 minutes later and no water came out of the pee hole after 15 seconds of running, so I shut it down again. Could it be a thermostat, a clog, or a bad impellor? You guys are great!

When has the impeller last been done, if you are unsure or dont know, its time to do it, and do a little maintainence while ur at it. Drop the lower unit and inspect the water pump and impeller. If there are signs of wear , scraping of the water pump, or the impeller is soft/ wont hold form, replace. You could always remove the t stats and run some compressed air or your garden hose up the water line to ensure that nothing is blocking it. When hooking it back up ensure that the water line slides into the impeller housing grommet nicely, and not knocking it loose. If you dont have one, a manual will help in this dramatically. The t stats may also be bad and not opening properly at the correct temp, id check on them as well.

What "pee hole" are you referring to jw? The little tell tale on the lower engine pan didn't make an appearance till around 78'. Did some one install it do ya' know? If so, where is the location on the block.

Posting the model number would help.

The model number is 40555C. To tell you the truth I don't even know what the "tell tale" hole is. I haven't worked on anything that new. I don't even know where the tstats are. I know, I know, get a manual. Also, I thought the impellor was the water pump. What is the difference between the two?

I have that same exact model and have the manual for it. The "tell tale" is what you called a "pee hole", the manual calls it "water outlet and exhaust relief". I recently replaced the thermostat on my '76 35hp Johnson just because I was in there. Interestingly I can't find any references to the thermostat in the 40555 manual. Apparently it doesn't have a thermostat.

The Impeller is part of the water pump. The complete assembly includes the housing and plate and misc parts like the grommet (the rubber bushing to seal the connection to the water tube) which should be checked for leaks for cooling problems. The manual recommends a 163 degree calibrated crayon which should NOT melt. If you have a good thermometer you can measure the head temp and it should not be higher than 163 degrres
