OK replaced the head gasket / thermostat / it pumps good water and it is still running hot. Once the motor gets going you almost can not hold you hand under the tell tale its so hot. Is it possible that running lean would cause this condition? Or time to start tearing stuff apart again? Are these hot running little motors or what?
Thanks for the e-pinions.
TH

If you are running WFO the stream will be pretty warm to the touch but won't be uncomfortable. It is possible that you have a restriction in your water jackets. A likely place seems to be where the thermostat goes in. Pieces of old gasket or gunk seem to collect there occasionally. Take the thermostat out and try to flush the system with a hose. You might have to drop the lower unit and hook a hose up to the copper tube and flush it that way. You might just have a faulty thermostat too. Try running it (for test purposes only) without the tstat in and see if your water cools off. Don't run all the time without it unless you really like buying fuel.

Fireman,
I was going to pull out the new t-stat and run without it for a while. I can flush it then...again. The tell take is very hot all of the time at least after having the motor going for a little bit.

I had the same problem with a 99 johnson 90hp.
We enden up grinding down 1mm of the spring behind the stats so they open just a little bit more at WOT.
Mine only overheated at WOT.
