i have a 75 mercury 1996 model and the water seems to barley pee out of the hole. I changed the water pump and the problem is still there. I understand there is a thermostat on the motor could this be the solution? anything would be great

Re: peeing problem on mercury

Do a search on here and you will find more info.
I have a 40 1998 and it is used in muddy/mucky conditions. It never over heated but the pee hole had little if any water. I verified the impeller etc. and no help. On the muffs it worked fine.
I now keep a wire in my pocket to clear the pee hole. Lo and behold it spits water great. I believe it is a problem with the width of the hole in the pee hole.
I verified there was no problem by going to a very clear body of water and running the motor. I did not have any problems.
Hope this helps.
This year I am going to experiment with orafice opening to see if I can alleviate the problem.

that does sound similar to my situation, no over heating but low pressure out of pee hole. Will try cleaning out the hole itself.

I had the same problem 2 yrs. ago, ground wasps plugged pee hole about 1/4 inch inside of tube, i took it off the motor and cleaned it, worked like a charm.

I check the hose going to the tell tale every time i take my boat out. Only takes a second to pop the cover off and remove the hose and put it back.

Re: peeing problem on mercury

Just a quick note or tip about this. Down here in Louisiana, there is a lot of duckweed, mud, and other crud that, at times, seem to find their way into our motors and plug or partially plug up the pee hole. I keep about 3 feet of medium-sized weedeater string in the back of my boat. It works great for those times when I have to rod out the pee hole while out on the water. Rolls up nice and small when you are finished too.

I use a stainless wire leader that is coated with plastic(had on hand from some project or other). I also keep it rolled up in my life vest pocket. Still going to drill opening just a skosh larger to see if helps.

Re: peeing problem on mercury

Telmanmn -- My fishing buddy has (had) a constant problem with the tell tale plugging on his 50 Merc. In my view, the plastic fitting at the end of the tell tale where it goes through the hull is the major culprit. The tapered tip of its barb-type construction acts like a trap to catch debris. We took the fitting out and pushed the tube through the cowl. The narrowing of the tube caused by the smaller diameter hole creates about the same restriction as the fitting but its a much smoother transition and less likely to plug. He's had no problem since. Try that before drilling anything.
