I am in the market for a pellet stove. Was wondering if any members here have one. I have no idea whats good and what is not. I tried looking on the web for a impartial comparison but that was an exercise in futility. Been to a couple of dealers and of course they all say theres are the best. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: Pellet stove

:) Why would anybody want to store and lug bags of pellets, or wood when it is much easier to have gas with a thermostate on the wall for when the power goes out!! Everybody has differant preferances!!!

After being tired of lugging wood, then coal, I finally switched to a 40,000btu gas fire place with a thermostate on the wall!!! Should have done it years ago!!! ;)

Flathead...I don't have a pellet stove, but I do heat with firewood only. I have seen pellet stoves that are quite efective. You can get hoppers to feed weeks or more of pellets, and thermostats to control the heat. Where I live you can heat a 3000 square foot house for under 250 bucks a year. If you use gas or electric heat you will spend 4-5 times that amount...sorry I don't have any specifics on any brands for you, but "Consumer Reports" magazine is a good place to start. They do have a web page. Another place to look is "Mother Earth News"...and they have always had an extensive web site...Good luck
:)

Thanks Chief I tried the consumer report and came up zero. The mother earth news had some excellent info on pellet stoves, but no real comparison info.

-------------------------------------------------

Why would anybody want to store and lug bags of pellets, or wood when it is much easier to have gas with a thermostate on the wall for when the power goes out!! The place I bought has a wood stove on the bottom floor and all the wood I could ever need right out the back door.So a power outage would be no great shakes. I want to add a pellet stove to the second floor fireplace so I can let it run while I am at work. With a house with electric heat you need to do something to save the $$$$$

A little extra work never really bothered me.

Flahthead, I was at the NY state fair a couple years ago looking at pellet stoves and the same booth also sold pea coal stoves. I don't have one but I was quite impressed with them. Something you might want to check into.by the way, congrats on the new house.

Re: Pellet stove

I have a Quadra-Fire Pellet stove. I use it to heat the house in the winter so that I dont have to use the central heat as much, try to save money as gas prices continue to rise. My house is approx 2600 square feet, and the pellet stove will keep the whole house at a comfortable 72 degrees all winter long while only using one 40lb bag of pellets every 5-7 days. One bag of pellets is about $2.00.
