3 of them for???

Oh yeah, that's more of a 40-50# reel, unless you want a ton of line on the reel.

What kind of fish do you plan to target with it? What kind of fishing, bottom fishing or trolling?

I have 14 of the original 113H that I use for trolling, bottom fishing, etc. The reel was later renamed the 113HSP.

Its a solid 3/0 (#30 reel) with ~#20 of drag with a little help. Great reel. I little on the heavy side, weight wise, but a good solid reel none the less.

What do you want to know about them?

FWIW: you an find nice 113H on E-bay for $50 all day long. Put $20-$25 into then rebuilding the drag and you have a good solid reel for under $75

I have five of them, together with a few 112s and 114s. They are very dependable reels although I have had to replace the washers on the drag several times. If I was going to spend that sort of money on a reel ,it would be going to a level wind with a reel counter. You can get a lot of the old Penns on E-bay for a lot less and usually they are in fine shape.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but all Penn reels with a '2' in the model number (H2, L2, H2LW, H2-LH, H2SP), or with an original MSRP of less than $250 US, are made in China. They started that in 2009, and there were no pre-2009 '2' reels manufactured. If the box says 'Made in USA', that's referring to the box. Look at the reel body, it will say China. :(

You can check specs on Penn reels here: http://store.scottsbt.com/PennParts/History.aspx, ask anything you wanted to know about (not just) Penn reels, here: http://alantani.com/

They have probably been in and out of the box for a few times so a good dusting would be in place. You also want to make sure that the grease on the sprockets has not dried up and hardened. For all you know, these reels may have been in that store for the last 10 years. There are no upgrades and the drags should be fine.

As Rolmops noted, it's been sitting a while. You'll want to tear it down and clean out all the old grease. Relube with Super Lube grease.

While you're at it, check the drag stack. The older reels where shipped with a 3 stack drag. You will want to replace it with a "wet" 5 stack drag that has thinner washers.

Use either Cals or Shimano drag grease on the drag washers

Well Man you guys ROCK! Thanks for the help so far. So where do I get the "wet" 5 stack drag that has thinner washers? Can you add a direct link to where to go to find this certain product?

I also found out the guy who works there has Olds penns for sale as well. He has a 500 USA Jiggmaster. So I will prob get that one since its a classic and Easy to get parts and work on. I will keep in touch and maybe Pics!

The 500 jigmaster USA is a second generation reel. I'd look around for a Squider in good shape if that is the type of reel your looking for.

Here is all the information you need to upgrade the drag on a "Senator" http://www.360tuna.com/forum/f72/basic-penn-rebuild-113h-114h-jigmaster-912/

Find yourself 80's model 140L. They had chrome over brass spools.

go to the alantani.com link I gave you above. He has step-by-step instructions on tearing down and tuning-up the old Penns. Once you've done one, you've done them all pretty much.

Great thread. I have Penn 209 I've not used in a number of years (too many to mention--lol) and when I did it was in fresh water. Nice read and learn all your tips and links to parts! Thanks.

I used the 209's for Muskie's here on the Michigan waters and loved them. Darn near unbreakable!! Still have 2-3 of them rigged just dont chase ski's anymore.

Re: penn 113 h2 USA Made!

Fortunately, I loosened off the drag washers and oiled it before wrapping and storing it about ten years ago. Had it out the other day and it seems to be functioning fine. Not sure if it will be necessary to disassemble it to see if any condensation corrosion damage occurred.
