Perfect Prop

Replaced the old, banged up 14.5x17 pitch prop she came with with a 15x17 pitch. Both three blades. I did have to grind my trim tab down about a 1/4" for prop clearance when it expands at high rpm. EZ Duz It is a 1976 17' Apollo Tri Star with the 250 cu in L6. Wide open on perfect water, with just me and a half a tank of fuel and she does nuts on 40 mph at 4500 rpm which is perfect. Jumps right outta the hole and planes out nicely. Pulls a tube and corners nicely without having to hardly give it any more throttle. Like the title says. It's a perfect prop. I could have gone with a 19 pitch for more top speed but I'd loose the low end torque she has. My buddy has a slightly modified but very similar 1977 17' Jolly Roger with the same engine but he converted to all electronic ignition which I plan to do myself. He runs a 14x21 pitch prop and does darn near 50 mph but I destroy him out of the hole and it takes him a min to catch up and pull on me. Mercruiser has several trim tab anodes, made for props with more rake. One of those might fit your outdrive, without grinding.

I read a lot of recommendations with guys just grinding them down a bit. Worked out great. No difference in steering, trim or ride quality. Just keep your grinding even. Replacement would be good for a guy who's not comfortable with an angle grinder.
