We just recently watched it again and wondered if a sailboat can really take the rolls or would the mast and keel just smash and splinter instantly. I know it was a hollywood movie...

Haven't seen the movie in a long time, but a sail boat will "USUALLY" loose it's mast in a 360? roll, but not always. The keels will usually stay on and keep the boat right-side-up.

if ya could cut the sail loose prior to the roll so it knifes thru the water. seems like ya'd stand a much better chance of savein the main mast....i come from small sail boats. that's how ya turn'em right side up when they overturn. ya gotta cut the sail loose so it knifes thru the water or ya never get it right side up......

i know nothing about that, but i like the idea for sure. right side up has got to be good........
