I am having trouble with my 1990 Evinrude 115. It starts up good, and seems to idle pretty well. In neutral, it will rev up good when I pus up the throttle. However, in gear and in the water, it will not open up over half speed and the boat never gets on plane. I am going through the manual, checking all the troubleshooting tips, but so far, have not hit the solution. I don't think its a dirty carburetor, because I have cleaned it thoroughly and inspected all the nozzles and orifices.

Any suggestions on what to check would be appreciated.

Re: Performance Issue

Since you say you've went by the book can we assume the motor has good compression and spark?

You say you cleaned the carb. It has 2 carbs, if you only cleaned 1 then the other one should be done too.

Re: Performance Issue

Both carbs were cleaned. Little slip of the typing finger there. Compression and spark are on my agenda to check next. The boat is 100 miles away, so I am trying to get everything I need together before I go back down to the water.

Spark is something I am seriously wondering about. It has a new charge coil and powerpack, but I have not checked each individual ignition coil.

When you cleaned the carbs how many orifices/jets did you find, remove, and clean in each bowl? Hint***the answer should be four. (This assumes you have an 90 degree crossflow motor, not a looper. Model # may help. I can never remember when they started the 115 loopers)

A compression check is the 1st step on this one. Post findings.

An open air gap spark check is also the 2nd must do step. Spark should jump 7/16" with a bright blue snap on an appropriate tester. Report findings.

A fuel sample from the end of the hose into a clear jar. Look for separate layering after it settles down. Also verify it is clear and not cloudy.

while you are 100 miles away and away from the net...if it has even compression on all and over 100-110, and has good spark, and is not overheating you can try squeezing the bulb while experiencing the issue, may need a helper. Also may try holding key in while experiencing the issue.
