First trip with the Genesis 55AP on my Boston Whaler Montauk 17.

Downside: It is a heavy motor. It was all I could do to lift it onto the bow mount base with the boat on the trailer. Along with some other weight additions to the front of the boat it altered the boat performance enough that I need to drop an inch or two in pitch on my prop. A little complicated to operate, too. Took me a while to do everything right the first time without referring to the manual.

General: I have a single, dual purpose battery (Wal Mart Everstart Marine Max) for starting and for the troller and operated two full days without running out of electrons. Did an overnight charge and three more days. This thing really sips power when used for positioning and shoreline casting. The 40 amp charging system on the outboard could probably have kept up when running from spot to spot without recharging.

Upside: Push a button to deploy, automatically rotates to straight ahead. Adjust motor up or down with a push of a button. Turn with foot pedal or push a button. Turn on the Autopilot and forget it until you want to change direction. Push a button to store, automatically turns motor to store position. Display tells you remaining battery life in hours at present speed.

Bottom line: I love it! On the Montauk I had to lean over the high bow rail to deploy or store my non-Genesis Minn Kota AP and it was tough on my back. I am glad I got it.
:)

Re: Performance report: Minn Kota Genesis.

JB:
9 AM Monday July 28th 03
Just installed a AC unit in the house and was taking a break, as usuall came here to read. Wow! I had to grab a old Bass Pro book to look up what a Genesis 55AP was... sweet deal! Going to be thinking about ya next time I have to pull the lanyard and put the bow mounted electric down by hand! :) Glad it worked out well and was worth your effort of installing. Lets see.. my anchor goes down and up with the push of a button, as do my down riggers... next the trolling motor! hehe
Break time over... back to real life

Link
