Performance with shoot thru hull transducer

Hello All,

I have an 1978 fiberglass boat and I'm deciding on which type of transducer to use with my new fish finder. I really do not want to drill any holes in the old girl so I was thinking about a shoot thru hull transducer.

I believe it to be a single hull which is what the manufacturer calls for. I'm thinking of one of the Hummingbird PiranhaMAX units.

Has anyone had any experience with the shoot thru hull units or are they a waste of time?

Thx,

They work fine, but you have to glue them to the hull with a bit of epoxy, mix slowly to avoid bubbles. I used one connected to a Lowrance flasher style years ago, it was quite reliable.

Well, I epoxyed in my shoot-thru hull transducer today. I'll give it a few days to dry and test it out.

I'll post results once I get her wet!

I use one for my backup depth sounder and it works great, no problems at all.

Nice! I was thinking transom mount but chickened out because of the thought of holes in the fiberglass...

The shoot thru hull worked quite nicely. I like the depth reading at full speed. Something my last transom mounted unit had trouble doing. I'm not sure how much sensitivity I'm losing but so far so good.

If you pause it around 0:45 seconds, you can see the reading on the screen.

Here's a video link to my quick test run. I'm on Lake Superior. If you look in the distance at the beginning, you can catch a glimpse of the Sleeping Giant.

Cheers!
