Perhaps a foolish question...

Well. Ill admit, Im a stranger to powerboats. In fact the only watercraft I have ever owned is a nice little 15 foot canoe when I was younger.

Anyhow. Back onto the inital question. How does the drainplug go in? Does it go in side of the boat then press the tab down to lock it in, or does it go outside of the boat?

My logic is telling me that Id probably want to put it on the Inside of the boat incase it springs free, but its better to ask then have to dash for shore because of a poor judgment!

It can go on either side on most boats. I think most put it in form the outside. When put in from the out side the water is trying to push it in more. When put in from the inside the water is trying to push it out.

To make it simple put it in from the outside but carry a spare tied to a line and hung where it can be put in from the inside.

You always need a spare anyway or a tapered wooden block.

It goes inside of the boat. The purpose of doing so is to allow you to remove it while underway (on plane, please!) so that water in the boat can be drained. I too keep a couple of spares in the boat.

My personal view of things is that I wouldn't insert it from the outside simply because it would be easy for something to get caught on the lever, thereby pulling it to the "open" position. That, in turn, would make it easy for the plug to come out. If that happened and you didn't have another on hand, life could get a wee bit interesting!

Re: Perhaps a foolish question...

it totally depends on the boat set up. if you can get it in easily from the inside, that is best. but, many boats do not have access from the inside, ie: I/O's, fuel tanks, some bass boats. then you have to go from the outside. the T handle twist plug is best for this application, ( like an old thermos stopper). some boats even have threaded, thru hull fitting, that use a 1/2" pipe thread plug. the boats that are outside plugs, should always be equipped with a bilge pump, as there is no way of emergency draining, that jay mentioned.

I use a T handle type plug from the outside. It's much easier to get to it from the outside, and I have a bilge pump. I don't think I would ever use a lever type plug from the outside, it would be too easy to dislodge.

Ok fellas. What kind of plug do I have. It looks like a black rubber plug. You pull the handle up, put it in and then fold the handle down and it expands into the hole..

It's a "snap lock, lever type" best used on the inside., at or above the waterline. Remove it when underway to drain your cockpit. "T" handle types are better all around plugs.

how about a photo? If it makes you wary... then chuck 'em. For a few bucks each, get new ones. Better yet, you can order them right here from iboats:rolleyes:

Re: Perhaps a foolish question...

I have had only 1 boat that I ever even considered plugging from the inside and that was a 14' starcraft. For 2 reasons Startcraft in the early days made there bung hole way to close to the center chine and it "could" get cought and be pulled loose in river use.?? Everything else I have plugged from the outside..,,,,,in all my days I have never heard of anyone "Loosing" a plug but I have heard people use that excuse LOL I have a stiker on my dash that says "Did you put the plug in dummy"? Sounds dumb but I have yet to sink one knock on wood!

I personally plug mine from the inside but like others have said sometimes you dont have a choice but to plug them from the outside, but as far as the type of plug i would use a T-handled plug they are alot easier to use in my opinion and alot safer. Just my pennies worth :D
