Guess this is the right spot? I like the custom of introducing myself on the first post. Pay my respects to my forum elders. Sooo -

My name is Randy. And I live in North Central Arkansas. I am an Industrial Systems Control Technician. And have ben in the electrical industry for 30 years. I have several nice lakes within a couple hours driving distance. And my favorite Out of all is Lake DeGray in Arkadelphia ( furthest one away from me ). Reason this lake is my favorite is: This lake is my earliest referance to boating. My father loved the water too ( ex-Navy ). So he purchased a 60"s model Try-Hull Glastron when I was About 10 y/o. And we took her to the lake every weekend. My father tought me and my younger brother how to ski on this lake . And he tought me many things about boating. I was very honered when I was given responsibility over the boat during loading / unloading. And I actually became very masterful at loading this boat.

Boating hasn't always been apart of my life. But water & sun have. My firts boat purchase was a new 1999 Bayliner Capri 1750. She was a nice craft to reacquaint me with the water. Plus I learned how to do my own service on her and the trailer. She was a very good family boat. I tought my daughter how to ski out of this boat ( guess which lake ). And we enjoyed here for several years. Everyone knows the old sayin about the best two days in a boaters life. Well that last day was a sad day for me. We all know how life changes things. Guess it was just fate.

That brings us up to present. Life events have possibly given me an avenue back into the boating world. So I have a renewed intrest in owning another boat. The oppertunity is still a few months away. But this gives me the oppertunity to really figure out what type of craft that I really want. And can afford to maintain and opperate. I chose the Capri because of her sleek styling. And my intrests haven't changed in that respect. But I would like to have a boat with a little more spirit than the previous. And being that my finances will still be fairly modest, my attention has moved towards an older ( classic ) boat. And that is how I found myself here.

I've always been a little bit leery about buying used. Especially a boat. Because there are so many important areas that you just can't see on a boat. One of my few "trusted" boating resources once told me that: the worst thing you can do to a boat is get it wet. And this still makes some since. Anyway, so I decided to educate myself on things to do / look for when buying an old boat. And that is when I came across "Jay" ( aka: FriscoBoater ). This guy is absolutely amazing for what he has done to expand the knoledge of "wannabes" like me. And the reason for me joining this community. THANK YOU is not nearly enough to say to this person. No disrespect to the collective knoledge of this board. I'm quite sure that it is vast and deversified. But for what ever reason he does it, Jay really has gone "above-and-beyond". So I now have a burning passion to own a classic sport boat. And I now believe that it's within my skillset ( and budget ) to own, opperate, maintain, and even restore if necessary, one of these classic boats. I am leaning towards a jet drive ( spirited ) system. But I will need a little more education on these system. So I have plenty of "crusing the form" to do. Hope you have enjoyed this read ( and it wasn't to long ). And thanks for any warm replies in advance.

Hopeful of making new friends.
Randy

Welcome to the wonderful world of boating! Your life will be full of joy but your checkbook will be empty! You understand that BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand, don't you? I work overtime every week to pay to fill my tank and I enjoy every minute of it!

Ya I know what you mean. I've only had one Saturday OFF so far this year. And I can count the Sundays OFF on one hand. And that is just to support my other hobbies. IE: Harley Davidson - Hundred Dollor and JEEP - Just Empty Every Pocket. But I just have to manage one more toy in the box.:joyous:

Hey, welcome aboard, feller Arkie! Not sure where in north central you are, but I spent a very happy portion of a very happy childhood in Harrison. Sure is pretty up there. We kept an old (it was even old then:laugh:) Arkansas Traveler in a slip at Cricket Creek Marina on Table Rock. Not sure where my old man found the money, but we made some great memories on that lake. I still get up to the Buffalo whenever I can, but it's not as often as I'd like since the admiral expects me to log some lake time with her. DeGray used to be known for unbelievable fishing, but the old timers insist the Corps has ruined it with their meddling. No idea whether that's true, but if you want to travel that far to boat you need to spend some time on Ouachita. Makes DeGray look like a mudhole, and having been on all the big Arkansas impoundments it still may be my favorite, although if Table Rock were closer it'd be a tough call.

Hey, welcome aboard, feller Arkie!

Hey Incoop. Nice to make your aquaintance Sir. I'm in the Cabot are. So just a couple miles North of you. I was raised in the Levy area. But my "Admiral" is from the Cabot area. So we migrated North to be closer to her family. I realy like the Ouachita area. But that lake is like a maze to me. I launched a couple times out of Crystal Springs. But I was glad to have a GPS to find my way home. I've actually gained my confidence on Grears. I can find my way home without any help now. But I will always know Degray like the back of my hand. Only lake I feal confident running at night.

Good talking to you Sir.

Oh, okay. Heavy on the central part then. I gotcha. You're just up the road. My wife's gradmother lived on 33rd street. She always told people she was from LA (Levy Area). She was a mess.

Ya well you know that we're "northeners" to those LR people anyway. Small world for such a big forum. I was raised on 54th. Walked to school on Allen and Ridge Road. First job was at Kroger on Camp Robinson. I sure miss the good ole days. But it's hard to call that neighborhood "home" anymore.

I do understand what you're saying. Didn't grow up there myself, but I've heard enough of the admiral's stories to know exactly what you mean. Sad.

I've enjoyed our conversation Sir. Maybe one day our paths may cross.

Ditto Randy. Let us know when the boat plan comes to fruition.

No Problem there. I got the fever pretty bad right now. This forum has both aggrivated and eased the suffering. And I've set my goals pretty high ( as usual for me ). So I'm probably going to have to work hard for what I want.

Welcome aboard. Funny, but I am less concerned about a used boat than a car. And I buy used of both. Boats are so simple in comparison. Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome. I guess it's what is under the deck that is scaring me the most. After doing some research on old boats, and reading this forum on restoration projects, seems like that there is quite a bit to be concerned about.

But if you are even considering a new boat, surely less than 5 years old should be safe from a deck standpoint. Particularly something with a molded sole . . . ;) It is very good to be wary of soft floor/decks, but we are usually talking 10+ year old boats with wood decks when discussing those concerns.

I haven't seen the kind of boat that I'm wanting that new. Well not in my price range anyway. What I kinda have my heart set on is a jet in the 20' range with a closed bow and sport windshield. I'm also wanting a cockpit layout that has the two buckets up fron with a bench in back. But I'm not looking for an open engine design. So far, the boats that seem to catch my eye have been in the mid 70's to mid 80's era. Something like the Glastron Intimidator. I've also really became a fan of any of the Carlson designs. And I could probably live with an I/O being that I am familiar with maintaing them. But I really want something different. Being that these boats are a little hard to find for sale anyway. And a lot harder to find in real good condition. I'm probably looking at a restoration to get what I want. And I only expect to have a budget of somewhere around 20K.

Like I said earlier "I've set my sites pretty high". Everyone that knows me knows that I have a champaign tast on a beer budget. But I'm not afraid to get dirty and work for what I want. I just need to know how.

Yap. Thats all most as close as you can get to what I want. It would be a little nicer if she wasnt 1500 miles away. I'm not rich enough to pay for shipping. Even if it is still within my budget. Just can't justify it.
